Tree Planting Ceremony Scripts for a Wedding Ceremony With PDF's
One of my favorite places to perform weddings is in a couple’s backyard. Spend your money on your home, not your wedding. Your ceremony decorations can be landscaping for years to come.
In the Indianapolis area, where I live and officiant weddings, there are also many beautiful gardens that also serve as wedding venues. These are two situations in which a Tree Planting is a great unity ceremony option for your wedding ceremony.

What is a Unity Tree Ceremony?
What is a Unity Tree Ceremony? A unity tree ceremony is when a couple plants a tree together during their wedding ceremony to symbolize their marriage. The sapling is planted in fertile soil, given light and water and encouraged it to develop deep roots. You then allow it to grow and bear fruit, pruning when necessary. The same goes for growing a healthy marriage.
How Do You Perform A Unity Tree Ceremony?
Couples don’t always plant a tree, as a gardener would. If it is their yard, the tree will already be planted and they add additional soil or water it. It’s a lot cleaner. Instead of a tree, some couples will water a plant together. The soil they ceremonial add might be from their childhood backyards if their parents still live there. It symbolize the continuity of family and the roots they have already grown.
One of the couples I’ve married chose the Unity Tree Ceremony because they were married in a beautiful garden venue and it fit the theme. The bride purchased a houseplant she was told was impossible to kill, knowing that, in real life, neither she nor her husband had a green thumb. They forgot the watering cans they purchased for the ceremony. (Yes, they really did not care about this at all.) We ended up using champagne glasses. They toasted with the glasses before pouring the water into the plant. It worked perfectly!

What do you say during a Unity Tree Planting Ceremony?
When I perform a unity ceremony I usually like to talk about the meaning behind it. There is generalized meaning for every unity ceremony – you are doing something that symbolizes your joining together and once you are joined, what you create cannot be undone. I try and personalize the unity ceremony to the couple and the situation.
I’ve included several readings to choose from that can be read before or after the couple performs the ceremony. During most formal ceremonies with professional musicians or a DJ, music will be played while the couple performs the ceremony. If there is no music, the passage can be read while the couple performs the ceremony.

Pro Tip: As a wedding officiant, I think it’s a good rule of thumb to read the ceremony outloud when you are writing it. Often wedding ceremony scripts can be poetic and lovely but don’t sound quite right when you read them. You can always re-write any of these scripts to suit your situation.
